Who is the Cal Poly Triathlon Team?

Back in 1988, when denim outfits and shoulder pad jackets were in style, the Cal Poly Triathlon Team was born. Starting out with only 6 enthusiastic members, barely $100 dollars in the team account, and a goal to race Wildflower Triathlon, the team grew within the next year to 65 members. Most of the members were new to the emerging sport of triathlon and did not know how to race a triathlon.  The four officer members had to teach themselves and the team how to swim, bike, run, and become a respectable club sport.   Little did the 6 founding members of Cal Poly Triathlon Team know their modest club would become the largest club sport on campus. In about 28 years, the team has grown to 172 members and the 7th ranked collegiate triathlon team nationally and is expecting to be top five in the nation this year. The team has 15 officers, 11 student coaches each specializing in a different leg of triathlon, a professional head coach, and two race committees. March Triathlon Series and Heart and Soles 5K, 10K, and Kids Run are our two major fund raising events. Along with offering discounts for races, the Cal Poly Triathlon Team also offers discounted bikes, apparel, nutritional supplements, and equipment for the members. Everything the team has built over the last 28 years has been to allow students of Cal Poly to experience triathlons in a friendly, affordable team environment. The team’s dynamic is centered around inclusion, allowing everyone from first time triathletes to nationally ranked individuals who have been racing since a young age to enjoy being a part of our team.
